Former President Donald J. Trump, receiving the endorsement of the National Rifle Association on Saturday, positioned himself as a strong supporter of gun owners and gun businesses, claiming that the right to bear arms was in jeopardy under President Biden.
“If the Biden regime gets another four years, they will come after your guns,” stated Mr. Trump in Dallas, where he headlined the N.R.A.’s annual meeting.
Addressing the group while facing criminal charges related to falsifying business records, Mr. Trump asserted that he understood the feeling of having rights stripped away more than anyone.
“In my second term, we will reverse every Biden assault on the Second Amendment,” he declared to enthusiastic applause. He also reiterated his commitment to dismiss the head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives on his first day in office if elected.
The annual event focusing on gun rights seemed less prominent compared to the last time Mr. Trump attended in 2022, following a tragic mass shooting in Texas. Despite challenges faced by the N.R.A., speakers at the meeting emphasized the organization’s strength and resilience.
The N.R.A., once a significant political force, has experienced membership declines and internal disputes. Recent legal rulings have exposed financial misconduct among its leaders.
Outside the event, advocates for stricter gun laws gathered, highlighting the need for enhanced safety measures following mass shootings across the country.
Mr. Trump urged gun owners to support his re-election campaign and emphasized his commitment to protecting Second Amendment rights.
Despite his claims of being a staunch supporter of gun owners, Mr. Trump’s stance on firearms legislation has been inconsistent, with previous statements indicating support for stronger gun laws during his presidency.
