The fiancé of a missing Ohio art student who disappeared nearly 13 years ago has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter.
John Carter, 36, initially faced two counts of murder when he was arrested in March 2023. He is now looking at up to three years in prison as he awaits sentencing on July 18.
The charges stem from the August 2011 disappearance of Katelyn Markham, who was last seen at her home in Fairfield. Markham was close to completing her graphic arts degree at the Art Institute of Ohio—Cincinnati at the time, and Carter had mentioned plans to move to Colorado later that year.
In 2013, skeletal remains found in a wooded area in Cedar Grove, Indiana—approximately 20 miles (about 32 kilometers) west of Markham’s home—were identified as hers. Authorities determined her death to be a homicide but were unable to ascertain the cause of death.
Prosecutors in Butler County have alleged that Carter caused Markham’s death through physical violence and force.
