The history of Monaco dates back to ancient times when it was first settled by Phoenician sailors, followed by Greek colonists in the sixth century BCE. The Phoenicians considered it a sacred city dedicated to their god Melqart, while the Greeks associated it with Hercules, who supposedly passed through the city during his legendary adventures. According to the Greek geographer Strabo, a temple dedicated to Heracles Monoikos was built in Monaco. The term Monoikos translates to “single house” in Ancient Greek, although its exact meaning is open to interpretation. Some suggest it was an epithet of Hercules, while others believe it referred to the temple itself or the city’s isolated location. Regardless, the temple’s name eventually became synonymous with the city, evolving into the Monaco we know today. The presence of Port Hercules in Monaco serves as a reminder of this ancient connection.
