Democratic Institutions Minister Dominic LeBlanc is confirming a plan to establish an ongoing commission of inquiry to investigate allegations of MPs collaborating with foreign interferers.
However, Mr. LeBlanc is currently hesitant to fulfill a request from a senator to grant commissioner Marie-Josée Hogue the authority to publicly identify MPs involved in interference.
The National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians stated in a recent public report that some MPs knowingly aided foreign states in meddling with Canadian politics.
The House of Commons voted on June 11 to support a Bloc Québécois motion for the federal inquiry to examine the unproven allegations.
Elizabeth May of the Green Party, who holds top secret-level security clearance, expressed relief after reading an unredacted version of the report on June 11.
Ms. May believes that the few MPs mentioned in the report did not intentionally betray Canada.
