Severe flooding and heavy rainfall in southern Florida led Governor Ron DeSantis to declare a state of emergency in Broward, Collier, Lee, Miami-Dade, and Sarasota counties. This emergency declaration was in response to the dangerous flooding caused by a tropical disturbance known as Invest 90L, as named by the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
Invest 90L brought 10 to 15 inches of rain, resulting in major flooding that affected critical infrastructure such as major interstates, state and county roads, airports, and schools. The NWS issued warnings of life-threatening flooding, urging residents to seek higher ground and avoid driving on flooded roads.
Although Invest 90L is not yet a cyclone, it continues to produce disorganized showers and thunderstorms over the Florida Peninsula. The NHC mentioned a slight chance of it developing into a tropical system as it moves towards the Atlantic Ocean after crossing Florida.
Despite the uncertainty of its development, heavy rainfall is forecasted to persist in parts of the Florida peninsula in the coming days. Governor DeSantis anticipates worsening conditions with additional rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms.
To manage the emergency response, Director Kevin Guthrie of the Division of Emergency Management has been appointed to coordinate the state’s efforts. The declaration also allows for the activation of the Florida National Guard and the Florida State Guard to assist in emergency response activities.
State agencies are authorized to suspend regulatory statutes and rules that could hinder necessary actions to address the crisis. Additionally, medical professionals with valid licenses from other states can provide free services in Florida during the emergency, facilitated by the American Red Cross or the Florida Department of Health.
Efforts are underway to deploy resources to impacted communities, with a reminder from the Florida Division of Emergency Management to avoid entering floodwaters, especially at night. The safety of residents is paramount, and following orders from local officials and having multiple ways to receive emergency alerts is strongly advised.
The situation in southern Florida has led to numerous challenges, including stranded individuals in flooded cars and flight delays at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. As the region continues to deal with the aftermath of Invest 90L, the collaboration of various agencies and the vigilance of residents are crucial in ensuring safety and effective response to the emergency.
