During her visit to Washington, Alberta’s environment minister, Rebecca Schulz, discussed the province’s stance on methane emissions and the potential impact of European countries imposing tariffs on natural gas with high methane emissions.
While European Union countries have approved a law to set methane emissions limits on oil and gas imports starting in 2030, Schulz expressed minimal concern about the issue. She mentioned that Alberta has been working closely with producers to reduce emissions and has already met their target of a 45% reduction ahead of schedule.
She acknowledged that other jurisdictions, including the United States, are also moving towards stringent methane targets that could affect Alberta’s energy market in the future. Despite scrutiny over Alberta’s methane emission reduction methodology, Schulz remains confident in the approach.
