A New York man reportedly attempted to drown his two young children at a Connecticut beach on Saturday but was thwarted by a group of heroic police officers who rescued the kids from the water just in time.
Romney Desronvil, a 41-year-old Queens native, was apprehended in West Haven and charged with attempted murder after being caught in the act of trying to harm his children, according to a statement from the West Haven police department.
Police were alerted to the incident when an officer on patrol near Ocean and Dawson Avenues heard screams coming from the ocean at around 2:30 a.m. Upon investigation, the officer spotted a Nissan SUV parked on the beach and saw a man and two young children in the water.
When the officer approached, Desronvil took the children further into the sea and ordered the officers to stay back. It became clear that he was intentionally trying to harm his children by drowning them, according to the police report.
Responding officers swiftly entered the water to rescue Desronvil and the children, who were about 100 yards offshore. Additional officers and firefighters joined in the rescue effort using a fire boat.
The children, both under 3 years old, are currently in critical condition at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital but are showing signs of improvement, as reported by the New Haven Register.
During a press conference, West Haven Police Chief Joseph Perno stated that the children’s mother had arrived in New Haven from New York by Saturday afternoon.
The officers and firefighters involved in the rescue have been granted time off to recuperate physically and emotionally, with three officers receiving treatment for minor injuries.
