Caeden Laffan, an off-duty firefighter-paramedic with the Oakland Fire Department, tragically passed away in Pacific Beach, San Diego, on June 27. Oakland Fire Chief Damon Covington expressed deep sorrow for the loss of the 25-year-old, describing him as a promising member of the department. “Our hearts are heavy today as we mourn the loss of Caeden Laffan, a dedicated and enthusiastic member of our team,” Chief Covington said.
Laffan’s family has strong ties to the Oakland Fire Department, with his father being the assistant fire chief who passed away in 2020 and his brother currently in training at the Oakland Fire Academy. Laffan had joined the department in 2019 and was considered a rising star.
While in San Diego for the firefighter’s summer Olympics, Laffan tragically lost his life. San Diego Lifeguard Services reported that he went missing after entering the water with friends and family members in the early hours of the morning. Despite a two-hour search, Laffan’s body was found north of Crystal Pier, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department paid tribute to Laffan by escorting his body to the Medical Examiner’s Office. Chief Colin Stowell emphasized the importance of honoring a fellow firefighter in times of tragedy. “I reached out to him and expressed my condolences to ensure we would take care of his member just like one of our members down here,” Chief Stowell stated.
