The investigation into the mishandling of bodies and ashes by a funeral home in Hull has been ongoing since March. Humberside Police have arrested a 54-year-old woman in connection to the inquiry into Legacy Independent Funeral Directors. She was apprehended on suspicion of money laundering related to the case.
The police initially launched the investigation in March and have since recovered 35 bodies and suspected human ashes at the firm’s main premises in Hull. This latest arrest marks the third in the case, with a 46-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman previously taken into custody in March on charges including prevention of a lawful burial and fraud. The man was re-arrested on July 3 for additional offenses.
Assistant Chief Constable Thom McLoughlin emphasized the complexity and sensitivity of the investigation, stating that they are striving to provide answers for the affected families. The detectives have been examining the mishandling of bodies and ashes by Legacy funeral directors, with 163 families involved in the case.
Mr. McLoughlin expressed the challenges of identifying human ashes using DNA profiles, which could be devastating for families. As the investigation continues, he urged those impacted to reach out for support.
The incident has sparked discussions about regulating funeral directors, with calls for stricter oversight and inspection protocols. The National Association of Funeral Directors and the National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance with their code of practice.
In light of the Legacy funeral directors not being members of these associations, there have been calls for all funeral homes to adhere to the same high standards. Transparency and communication with families are essential qualities of a reputable funeral director, according to industry experts. Please rewrite the following sentence:
