Reed Hastings, the co-founder of Netflix and a prominent Democratic Party donor, has publicly called for President Biden to step aside as the Democratic presidential candidate. Hastings, who has donated millions to support the Democratic Party, expressed the need for a new leader to defeat Trump and ensure the country’s safety and prosperity in an email to The Times.
While President Biden and White House officials have stated that he has no intention of stepping down, Hastings’s statement adds to the growing concerns among Democratic donors about Biden’s candidacy.
Hastings and his wife, Patty Quillin, have been among the top donors to the Democratic Party in recent years, contributing millions to support Democratic candidates and causes. Their donations have primarily gone to super PACs that aim to help Democrats in Congress.
Some influential figures in Hollywood, who previously supported Biden, are also beginning to voice their doubts about his candidacy. Ari Emanuel, a prominent Hollywood agent, recently expressed his frustrations with the current administration.
Hastings has been a strong advocate for education reform, while Quillin has focused on racial justice issues. Hastings has a close relationship with California Governor Gavin Newsom, who is being considered as a potential replacement for Biden. Hastings donated millions to support Newsom during the recall election he faced in 2021.
Having co-founded Netflix almost three decades ago, Hastings is now the executive chair of the company. He stepped down as CEO in 2023 to focus more on his philanthropic efforts, political activities, and his passion for skiing.
