Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson (R-La.) emphasized the significant threat posed by Beijing, stating that they exploit various aspects of our financial and economic systems. He expressed his support for renewing the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for a second term, highlighting its pivotal role in uncovering the dangers associated with the Chinese regime.
Established in January 2023, the House Select Committee on the CCP aims to raise awareness about China’s threat and devise strategies to safeguard the American people and economy. Through hearings, investigations, and policy recommendations, the committee has shed light on the challenges posed by China. Recently, a bipartisan working group was formed to address China’s dominance in critical mineral supply chains.
At a press conference on July 8 at the Hudson Institute in Washington, Mr. Johnson affirmed his endorsement of the committee’s continued efforts in countering the influence of the CCP. While his support carries weight as the speaker, the decision to extend the committee’s term ultimately rests with the House members.
Mr. Johnson outlined a series of bills that will be voted on in the House to counter China’s actions. These include restrictions on outbound investments to China, prohibitions on Chinese biotechnology, trade reform, and the implementation of the BIOSECURE Act. The aim is to empower the next administration to take swift action against adversaries that threaten the American economy and healthcare data.
Additionally, there are sanctions packages in place to penalize Chinese military firms supporting Russia and Iran. Mr. Johnson emphasized the collaborative efforts of authoritarian countries to undermine the United States and its allies.
The goal is to pass a substantial package of China-related legislation by the end of the year, focusing on key priorities. CCP House Select Committee Chairman John Moolenaar (R-Mich.) commended Mr. Johnson’s backing of the committee and pledged to work across party lines to protect U.S. interests.
In a statement, Mr. Moolenaar stressed the importance of unity in defending the nation against the Chinese Communist Party’s influence. He affirmed the committee’s commitment to bipartisan collaboration and cooperation with relevant committees to safeguard American values from the threats posed by the CCP. The text needs to be rewritten in a different way.
