A fortunate dog is now safe and sound at a shelter after a team of cavers found her deep underground in a cave in Narrows, Virginia. Dave Jackson and Jesse Rochette of CaveSim, a Colorado-based educational cave simulator company, were exploring Giant Caverns with a local couple when they made the unexpected discovery.
Upon spotting the dog, the group sprang into action to rescue her. Rochette, a self-proclaimed “dog-guy,” repelled down into the cave with a piece of salami to coax the shivering dog out. They wrapped her in blankets and provided water to help her recover.
Using their rescue training and gear, the cavers fashioned a makeshift harness to lift the dog out of the cave. The entire rescue operation lasted about three hours, but the dog showed signs of improvement once she reached fresh air.
After taking her to a veterinary hospital and then to the Giles County Animal Shelter, the dog, now named SPAR-C, was recuperating well. The shelter described her as a “living miracle” and expressed hope for her speedy recovery and eventual adoption.
Despite the challenging circumstances, SPAR-C was expected to make a full recovery with proper care. The shelter was actively seeking her owner but was prepared to find her a new loving home if necessary.
