Volunteers, philanthropists, and families gathered at Nationals Park on July 10 to celebrate the 16th Homeruns for Horton’s Kids event in Washington. The program benefits underprivileged youth in southeast D.C., offering academic and youth development, health and wellness programs, and community foundation programs. Executive director Erica Ahdoot expressed gratitude for the support that has allowed them to serve thousands of kids and families, with the hope of continuing their important work.
Attendees enjoyed free stadium food, sweet treats, face painting, puppy petting, and games on the home field of the Washington Nationals. The annual charity event, supported by corporate sponsors like Microsoft and H&R Block, has raised over $6 million to date.
Horton’s Kids, inspired by the Dr. Seuss book ‘Horton Hears a Who,’ has made a significant impact on the community. The program boasts a remarkable achievement of maintaining a 100 percent on-time high school graduation rate among its participants for the past seven years.
Executive director Erica Ahdoot emphasized the importance of community-based organizations in supplementing the efforts of schools to help students succeed. She highlighted the program’s success in helping kids identify their individual pathways to success, with participants being twice as likely to graduate high school on time.
Jermekkio Holliway, a 24-year-old caseworker and Horton’s Kids alumnus, credited the program with guiding him through school to earn his bachelor’s degree in social work. He expressed gratitude for the program’s role in helping him persevere and hopes to pursue graduate studies.
Volunteer Sue Brown, who has been involved with Horton’s Kids since 1999, praised the organization for its impact on the community. She highlighted the growth of the program from providing limited services to becoming a full community outreach hub, addressing food insecurity and other essential needs.
Ms. Brown emphasized the importance of building relationships with the children, noting that consistency and support are key factors in their growth and development. She described Horton’s Kids as a big family, providing a supportive and nurturing environment for the children in need.
