The ongoing debate on whether Australia should adopt nuclear energy continues to stir controversy. According to Mr. Watt, research from the parliamentary library shows that nearly 12,000 Australian farms are located within an 80-kilometer radius of proposed nuclear reactor sites. He emphasized the need for farmers to take precautions in the event of a radiation leak and inform their customers about operating within a fallout zone.
The federal opposition has proposed the construction of seven nuclear reactors across the country if they win the next election. The designated sites include power stations in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, and Western Australia.
During a speech at the Global Food Forum, Mr. Watt pointed out that nuclear energy generation requires a significant amount of water to cool radioactive cores. He criticized the lack of consideration for additional water sources in the nuclear energy debate.
In response, Leader of the Nationals David Littleproud criticized the Labor government’s focus on renewables, which he claimed was already impacting farmers in central Queensland.
