DoorDash and Alphabet subsidiary Wing have teamed up to launch a rapid fast food delivery service.
Starting from July 18, residents in Melbourne’s East will have the option to receive their food orders via drones, making it one of the quickest delivery services available. The drones will be used to transport small orders from various outlets located in Eastland Shopping Centre, which is one of the largest shopping centers in Australia. The delivery is expected to be completed in 15 minutes or less, faster than traditional car delivery methods.
This collaboration between DoorDash and Wing allows customers to access the service by clicking on the drone icon in the DoorDash app and placing orders from participating retailers. Some of the retailers included in this service are Gelatissimo, Schnitz, Sushi Hub, and over 20 more.
Upon reaching the customer’s location, the drone will slow down, descend to a delivery height of approximately seven meters above the ground, hover, and lower the package to the ground using a tether. This process ensures a safe and efficient delivery experience, as explained by DoorDash.
A spokesperson from DoorDash mentioned that Wing’s drones are specifically designed to deliver packages securely, reliably, and swiftly.
The partnership between DoorDash and Wing was established in late 2022 to develop drone technology for commercial use. Since then, the pilot program has expanded to new locations, including additional suburbs in South East Queensland and now into Victoria for the first time at Eastland Shopping Centre in Ringwood.
The new drone delivery service will cover 26 suburbs in Melbourne’s East, offering residents in areas like Ringwood, Mitcham, Nunawading, Donvale, and Boronia access to this innovative delivery option.
Wing, commenting on the initiative, highlighted the efficiency and environmental benefits of drone delivery in the Maroondah City Council area and surrounding suburbs. Jesse Suskin, a spokesperson from Wing, expressed excitement about launching drone delivery services in a new state and city, providing residents in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne with this convenient option.
Furthermore, the introduction of drone delivery at Eastland Shopping Centre was praised by Greg Balmforth, the general manager, for offering retailers an additional business avenue and enhancing the overall shopping experience for customers.
