As Americans prepare for another summer weekend, the National Weather Service is forecasting extreme weather conditions across the country.
According to the NWS’s Weather Prediction Center, from July 20 to July 24, there will be widespread temperatures in the 90s and 100s in the western states, with little overnight relief as lows will only drop to the upper 60s and 70s. This is a significant departure from normal temperatures, with the potential to tie or break records.
Excessive heat warnings are already in effect for much of the West, with temperatures expected to soar to 116 degrees in the Colorado River Valley, 110-115 degrees in the Las Vegas Valley, and 120 degrees in Death Valley National Park. Other areas in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho could also experience temperatures of 100-110 degrees.
Meanwhile, heavy rain is expected in the East due to a stalling cold front, with the potential for flash flooding in parts of Virginia, Georgia, Alabama, the Carolinas, and the Florida Panhandle. The NWS advises residents to plan ahead and be prepared for possible route changes.
Despite the rain bringing slightly cooler temperatures, the summer heat is still expected to reach 90 degrees in many areas, with heat indexes exceeding 100, 110, and even 115 degrees. The Weather Prediction Center’s Heat Index Calculator takes into account both temperature and humidity to determine how hot it feels outside.
It’s essential for individuals in affected areas to stay informed and take necessary precautions to stay safe during these extreme weather conditions.
