Spanish authorities announced the arrest of three pro-Russian hackers on suspicion of carrying out cyberattacks against Spain and other NATO countries for terrorist motives. The suspects are believed to have participated in distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks targeting public institutions and critical sectors, according to the Civil Guard.
The cyberattacks allegedly targeted websites of both public and private organizations in government sectors, critical infrastructures, and essential services in countries supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. The suspects, whose identities have not been disclosed, have not yet been charged or detained.
A video released by the police showed a raid at one of the suspect’s homes, where a Soviet-era hammer and sickle flag was displayed on the wall. The hacktivist group NoName057(16) is said to be responsible for organizing these cyberattacks in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The arrests were made in Manacor on the Balearic Island of Mallorca, as well as in Huelva and Seville in southern Spain. The investigation into the cyberattacks is ongoing, according to police statements.
