Ukraine suffered another setback in its ongoing conflict with Russia as a village in the east was reportedly captured by Kremlin forces. The village of Vovche in Donetsk Oblast fell in a fierce battle, although Ukrainian officials have not confirmed its capture by Russian troops.
According to reports, Moscow’s troops also took control of the nearby village of Progres. Russian forces are now aiming to advance further west towards the town of Pokrovsk and south to the community of Kurakhove, in an attempt to breach Ukrainian defenses.
President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the ongoing fighting in the Pokrovsk sector but did not specifically mention the losses at Vovche and Progres. He reassured the nation that measures would be taken to strengthen Ukrainian positions and inflict significant losses on the occupiers.
Meanwhile, Russia has adopted a new tactic of using cheap drones to detect Ukrainian air defenses. These unmanned aerial vehicles are being used as decoys to reveal the locations of defense batteries, allowing Russian military to target them with heavier weapons.
In a heartwarming gesture, Zelensky and his wife visited the National Specialized Children’s Hospital, which was previously hit by Russian bombs. The hospital is now rebuilding and resuming normal operations after the attack.
In a separate development, an 18-year-old gunman was arrested for the assassination of former Ukrainian lawmaker Iryna Farion. Viacheslav Zinchenko, the suspect, was detained on suspicion of murdering Farion, who was known for promoting the Ukrainian language over Russian.
Zinchenko, a law student, was arrested in Dnipro and is believed to have links to far-right social media pages and possibly Russian neo-Nazi groups. Zelensky praised the country’s security forces for their efforts in solving the crime.
