On July 28, 1880, San Francisco passed an ordinance prohibiting the operation of laundries in wood buildings without first obtaining consent from the board of supervisors. However, this ordinance was later found to be unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in the case of Yick Wo v. Hopkins in 1886.
