Ronald Rowe expressed his shame over the lack of proper security on a roof near the rally site. The Secret Service is taking action following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, as announced by the agency’s new acting director on July 30.
Acting Director Ronald Rowe Jr. visited the location of the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where the former president was shot by a man firing from the roof of the nearby AGR building. In his prepared remarks, Mr. Rowe stated, âWhat I saw made me ashamed. As a career law enforcement officer and a twenty-five-year Secret Service veteran, I cannot defend why that roof was not better secured.â
To prevent similar lapses in the future, Mr. Rowe directed personnel to thoroughly vet every event site security plan with multiple experienced supervisors before implementation. Mr. Rowe was set to deliver these remarks to two Senate committees on Capitol Hill in Washington.
Mr. Rowe assumed the director position after Kimberly Cheatle, the previous director, resigned a week after the assassination attempt on the former president. The Secret Service has since implemented enhanced protective measures to ensure the safety of individuals and locations under their protection.
Lawmakers from both parties criticized the Secret Service for failing to secure the rooftop of the building during the rally. Following the incident, the agency has strengthened protection for all individuals they protect, conducted threat assessments, and expanded their protection to new individuals.
Mr. Rowe emphasized the dedication of the Secret Service workforce and their commitment to protecting the nation’s leaders. He also mentioned ongoing efforts to enhance protection for events like the Democratic National Convention and the continued cooperation with investigations and oversight.
