Upon a recent realization, I discovered that in Serbo-Croatian, the words for “month” and “moon” are the same (mesec). This sparked my curiosity about how many other words for month have lunar origins. In Spanish, the word for “month” is mes, deriving from the Latin noun mensis (also meaning “month”), which can be traced back to the Proto-Indo-European word for “moon”, mehns. Similarly, in English, the word “month” comes from Proto-Germanic menoths, also with roots in mehns. This connection extends beyond Indo-European languages, with examples like Chinese yuè and Swahili mwezi (which can also mean “menstruation”) referring to both concepts. The Arabic word for “month”, shahr, comes from an Aramaic word for “moon”. This universal link between the words for “month” and “moon” across different languages is both fascinating and intriguing!
