Vice President Kamala Harris officially became the Democratic Party’s nominee for president in 2024 following a virtual roll call process, according to Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Jaime Harrison. The party announced that 99 percent of delegates voted for Harris, surpassing the delegate threshold required to secure the nomination. The DNC will formally certify the vote and hold a celebratory roll call at the upcoming convention in Chicago. The virtual roll call began on Aug. 1 and closed on Aug. 5, ahead of the convention scheduled for Aug. 19–22.
Harris is expected to announce her running mate before a campaign event in Philadelphia on Aug. 6, with potential candidates including Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. She expressed confidence in winning the election during a campaign livestream on Aug. 2, emphasizing the importance of unity in the process. The party’s convention in Chicago will feature Harris and her running mate, with President Joe Biden slated to deliver a primetime speech on the opening night.
