The Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) has discovered the body of a woman they have been searching for since 2020 in a landfill in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
The woman, Mackenzie Trottier, was the subject of a missing persons investigation and had been missing since December 2020 at the age of 22. After 93 days of searching, partial remains were found on July 30, with further remains discovered on Aug. 1.
Forensic testing confirmed the remains to be those of Trottier, although the cause of her death remains undetermined. Despite an autopsy being conducted, the Saskatchewan Coroners Service is still investigating.
Police identified a suspect in Trottier’s disappearance, but the individual passed away in an unrelated accident. Electronic devices belonging to the suspect led authorities to search the landfill.
Surveillance footage of a man believed to have information about Trottier’s disappearance has been released, with police clarifying that he is not the deceased suspect nor involved in her death.
The no-fly zone above the landfill has been lifted, and SPS extended condolences to Trottier’s family and friends for their patience and trust during the investigation.
A Facebook post dedicated to Trottier emphasized the love and remembrance for her, with family members requesting privacy following the police announcement.
āMackenzie, you were loved and never forgotten, and now you are home where you belong,ā a heartfelt message read.
Trottier’s mother expressed a desire for closure, stating, āI know in my heart what happened & they just need to close their case & let us heal in peace.ā
