University College London (UCL) has successfully obtained a High Court order to regain control of sections of its campus that had been occupied by pro-Palestinian protest camps since May. The court ruled in favor of UCL’s legal action against the “unauthorized occupational encampment” on its main estate, stating that the activists were protesting on private property. The judge granted UCL the order, emphasizing that the protesters had little chance of proving that their human rights would be affected or that the university had acted unfairly.
The protest, which began with 12 tents on May 2 and grew to 52 tents with around 50 activists, was triggered by Israel’s military actions against Hamas in response to attacks on Israel in October 2023. Similar protests occurred at other universities in the United States, such as Columbia University and the University of Chicago.
The court heard that UCL sought the possession order to prevent disruption to its academic community. The university cited escalating incidents and disruption related to the encampments, expressing concerns about using the main quad for upcoming events like freshers’ week in September. The aim of the possession order was to safeguard UCL’s right to its land and maintain its activities without disruption.
The escalating costs of managing the protest areas, exceeding £200,000 by July 19, led UCL to seek the possession order. The university argued that the protest was not a legitimate form of free speech as it impeded their property rights and aimed to pressure them to meet the protesters’ demands. Two identified students initially contested the possession order but later withdrew their defense.
Other universities in the UK, such as the London School of Economics, University of Nottingham, and University of Birmingham, also obtained possession orders to evict pro-Palestinian protesters from their campuses.
