Oliver Darcy, the former media reporter for CNN’s Reliable Sources newsletter, has announced his departure to launch his own media venture called Status. This new subscription-based newsletter will focus on the Fourth Estate, Hollywood, and Silicon Valley. Darcy’s version promises similar content to Reliable Sources but will require a monthly fee of $14.95 for full access. Elite perks, such as Zoom calls and events, will cost $595 per year.
CNN Deputy Managing Editor Jon Passantino praised Darcy’s work ethic and bravery in holding media executives accountable. Despite Darcy’s departure, Reliable Sources will continue under new leadership after a summer break.
Darcy’s exit comes amidst CNN CEO Mark Thompson’s efforts to revamp the network’s digital strategy, including a focus on subscription-based content. However, CNN’s previous attempt at a paid streaming service, CNN+, was shut down due to lack of interest.
Thompson, who took over as CEO in 2023, is pushing for a modernization of CNN’s website and other changes to boost revenue and expand the network’s audience. Despite challenges, Thompson remains committed to reshaping CNN’s future.
