An appeal by Team USA to overturn the decision to strip Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles of her bronze medal for the floor apparatus has been denied by an international sporting court. The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that an inquiry submitted by coach Cecile Landi, which led to an increase in Chiles’s score, was filed too late to be considered. Therefore, the bronze medal was awarded to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu instead.
Despite efforts by Team USA, the rules do not allow for a reversal of the decision. They are now exploring other avenues for appeal, including the possibility of appealing to the Swiss Federal Tribunal.
USA Gymnastics submitted evidence to the CAS showing that Landi’s inquiry was made just 47 seconds after Chiles’s score was published, missing the 1-minute deadline set by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) for score inquiries.
Initially, Chiles received a score of 13.666, placing her fifth. After an inquiry by Landi, her score was increased by 0.1, resulting in a final score of 13.766 and earning her the bronze medal.
Despite the ongoing saga surrounding Chiles’s bronze medal, the Paris Olympics have officially concluded with Team USA leading the medal tally. They finished with 126 medals, tying with China for the most gold medals but securing the most silver and bronze medals.
