Hideki Matsuyama was taken by surprise after being robbed in London earlier this week.
The Japanese golfer recounted on Thursday how he, along with his caddie Shota Hayato and coach Mikihito Kuromiya, were having dinner after the 2024 Olympics when a thief stole their belongings.
They only realized something was wrong later on.
âWe didn’t even realize it had happened,â Matsuyama said through an interpreter, as reported by PGATour.com. âWe were just having a friendly dinner, and Shota was the first one to notice â Hey, where is my bag? It was frustrating, but we were completely unaware of the theft. It happened suddenly… [the thief] just grabbed it and ran.â
Matsuyama, 32, was returning from the Paris Olympics, where he clinched the bronze medal at Le Golf National on Aug. 4, in preparation for the upcoming FedEx St. Jude Championship.
âIt was an unfortunate incident,â Matsuyama shared. âFortunately, I only lost my wallet, but Shota, my caddie, and my coach lost their passports. We are currently working on getting their visas sorted out so they can rejoin us as a team as soon as possible.â
Hayato and Kuromiya had to head back to Japan to have their passports and visas reissued, while Matsuyama continued his journey to the U.S.
