Democrats have transitioned from nominating multiple candidates to hosting a single candidate over the internet. However, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) is preparing to host its first in-person nominating convention in eight years after switching to a virtual event in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz are expected to be officially nominated at the 2024 DNC convention in Chicago from Aug. 19–22, with Harris potentially becoming the first female president in U.S. history. In 2008, Sarah Palin became a prominent figure in the political landscape. Meanwhile, Geraldine Ferraro joined Walter Mondale’s campaign, who was in a tough primary battle against Gary Hart. Mondale secured the nomination with the help of superdelegates, despite Hart winning more caucuses and state primaries. Jesse Jackson also played a significant role in the race, finishing in third place.
Ultimately, Mondale chose Ferraro as his running mate, making history in the process. However, the election resulted in a landslide victory for Republican President Ronald Reagan, with Mondale only carrying Minnesota and Washington, D.C.
Fast forward to 2020, the Democratic Party hosted a virtual convention across four stages due to the pandemic. Joe Biden received the nomination after securing 3,558 delegate votes, with Bernie Sanders also receiving significant support. Biden later chose Kamala Harris as his running mate, solidifying the Democratic ticket for the upcoming election.
