After being stuck and blocking traffic in the St. Lawrence Seaway near Montreal, a 138-metre cargo ship has finally been freed. Fisheries and Oceans Canada reported that two tugboats successfully towed the Dutch ship Heemskerkgracht to safety earlier today. The ship had run aground in the Kahnawake area due to an engine problem on Thursday, leading to the suspension of navigation in the South Shore Canal. Fortunately, there were no reports of pollution leakage or injuries. Ship traffic is now gradually resuming, but it may take up to three days for operations to return to normal, according to Jean Aubry-Morin from the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation. This incident occurred at an inconvenient time as the need for ships to transport goods has increased due to a work stoppage on Canada’s two largest railways.
