NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.—Three suspects robbed a man inside a white Rolls-Royce SUV and attempted to carjack another in a yellow Ferrari, resulting in gunfire, at an upscale Newport Beach shopping center, authorities said on Aug. 27.
The incidents occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 26 in the parking lot at Fashion Island near the Bloomingdale’s store in the city of Newport Beach, California. Witnesses informed the Newport Beach police that three individuals wearing ski masks approached a man in a Rolls-Royce, stealing his watch and wallet.
The suspects then targeted a man in a yellow Ferrari, trying to steal the vehicle, but the driver drove away quickly, leading one of the suspects to open fire at the luxury car and shatter a window.
The Ferrari driver eventually stopped at a nearby gas station. One of the victims sustained an ear injury, possibly from shattered glass caused by a gunshot at the vehicle, which was treated by paramedics, according to the police report.
The suspects fled the scene in a blue Kia sedan, authorities indicated.

In July, a tourist from New Zealand—Patricia McKay, 68—lost her life in an attempted robbery at the Fashion Island mall parking lot. Two suspects approached McKay and her husband as they were leaving the mall, attempting to rob them. The situation escalated, with McKay being dragged into the parking lot and fatally struck by a getaway vehicle driven by a third suspect.
The three suspects were apprehended on the same day and subsequently charged with murder.
