When we hear the word nuclear, our minds often jump to images of explosive warheads. However, the word itself simply means “of or pertaining to the nucleus”, as that is what is being split. The term “nucleus” was first borrowed into English in 1668, originally referring to the main part of comets or meteors, before being expanded to central masses in general. Its Latin origins trace back to “kernel”, with “nucula” meaning “little nut” and being the diminutive of “nux” (ultimately from Proto-Indo-European “kneu”, meaning “nut”). Interestingly, the pronunciation “nucular” has gained acceptance, with some attributing it to the influence of English speakers finding it easier to say or associating it with terms like “molecular”. Others suggest that some individuals intentionally use this pronunciation to appear more relatable or down-to-earth.
