Following a recent train delay that left Via Rail passengers stranded for approximately 10 hours in Quebec over the long weekend, Canada’s transport minister expressed his determination to uncover the root cause of the issue.
Pablo Rodriguez announced that he will be meeting with Via Rail leadership this week to address the situation.
“Passengers deserve better,” Rodriguez stated on X during his remarks on Sunday.
Via Rail confirmed that passengers experienced a 10-hour delay on Saturday due to a train breakdown between Montreal and Quebec City, resulting from two consecutive mechanical problems.
Unfortunately, no buses were available in the region to offer alternative transportation, leading to passengers enduring power outages, limited air conditioning, and restroom closures during repair and coupling processes with another train.
Despite the challenges, Via Rail ensured that passengers were provided with beverages, snacks, and a meal on board, along with additional water in the evening.
Ultimately, the fire department was summoned to facilitate the transfer of passengers from one train to another, resulting in a 10-hour delay in reaching their destination.
Via Rail also addressed an incident where an employee confiscated a passenger’s phone, stating that an investigation is underway and appropriate actions will be taken.
“We are dedicated to delivering exceptional customer service and treating all passengers with respect and dignity,” Via Rail stated in a Sunday release.
The company extended its sincerest apologies for the inconvenience caused to passengers and pledged to issue full refunds to those impacted.
