The U.S. Embassy in Turkey confirmed that two U.S. Marines stationed on the USS Wasp in Izmir were ambushed and assaulted by members of a local anti-American group.
The embassy issued a statement on social media platform X on Sept. 2, acknowledging the incident and assuring that the service members are safe.
The Izmir local governor’s office reported that five other U.S. soldiers witnessed the attack and provided assistance. Authorities have detained 15 suspects, with investigations ongoing.
The USS Wasp arrived in the region for a scheduled port visit after conducting joint training with Turkish military ships in the Mediterranean.
Anti-American Group Claims Responsibility for Attack
The Turkey Youth Union (TGB) claimed responsibility for the assault in two separate posts and videos on X, citing reasons related to the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
According to the TGB, the attack was a response to U.S. imperialism and its involvement in conflicts overseas.
The United States has increased its military presence in the Middle East following recent unrest and ongoing conflicts in the region.
