The former high-ranking aide to Gov. Kathy Hochul and Andrew Cuomo, Linda Sun, and her husband Christopher Hu, are facing charges of violating and conspiring to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act, visa fraud, alien smuggling, and money laundering conspiracy, according to a newly-unsealed indictment in Brooklyn federal court. Prosecutors allege that Sun and Hu received millions of dollars in kickbacks from China in exchange for advancing Beijing’s agenda in New York, using the funds to purchase expensive properties and luxury items.
Luxurious Gifts and Rewards
Among the gifts received by Sun and her family from Chinese officials are Nanjing-style salted ducks, concert tickets, travel opportunities, and job offers. Additionally, Hu’s business ventures in China benefited from Sun’s political connections, resulting in a money laundering scheme that allowed them to acquire a $4.1 million mansion in Manhasset, a $2 million luxury condo in Honolulu, and luxury vehicles such as a 2024 Ferrari Roma.
Seized Properties and Assets
Prosecutors have taken action to seize the properties and cars owned by Sun and Hu, along with approximately $210,000 in cash and funds from various accounts. Despite their modest reported incomes, the couple managed to live a lavish lifestyle through their illicit activities as alleged in the indictment.
Legal Proceedings
Linda Sun and Christopher Hu have been arraigned in Brooklyn Federal Court and are currently facing charges related to their alleged roles as foreign agents for China. The indictment sheds light on the extensive perks and rewards they received in exchange for their services, painting a picture of a clandestine double life that ultimately led to their downfall.
