The Las Vegas Judge Attacked During Sentencing Hearing
In a shocking incident that took place in January, Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus was viciously attacked when a convicted felon lunged at her during his sentencing hearing, as captured in a wild video. During a recent court appearance, Judge Holthus emotionally recounted the attack, expressing that she thought she was going to die as she recalled the traumatic event.
The attacker, Deobra Redden, pleaded guilty to attempted murder in a hearing that Judge Holthus testified in, detailing the moment when Redden tackled her and slammed her head against the floor. She shared that she felt defenseless during the attack and believed that the quick response of court officials saved her life.
One of the witnesses, law clerk Michael Lasso, described the scene as he wrestled Redden away from the judge and intervened to subdue him. The attack was unexpected and left everyone in shock, with Redden’s actions being captured on camera as he hurled himself over the bench towards Judge Holthus.
Redden’s defense attorney revealed that his client suffered from schizophrenia and was not taking his medication at the time of the attack. Despite considering a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, it was deemed too challenging to prove. Redden had previously attributed his actions to a bad day and expressed animosity towards Judge Holthus.
Following the incident, Judge Holthus received treatment for her injuries but was not hospitalized. She bravely returned to work after the attack, showing resilience in the face of adversity.
As the case continues to unfold, with Redden pleading guilty to attempted murder, the courtroom incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by individuals in the legal system.
