A newly released video shows police questioning Colt Gray about online threats to carry out a school shooting a year before he allegedly killed four people at Apalachee High School. The footage, released by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, shows deputies questioning Colt and his father, Colin Gray, in May 2023 after a tip from the FBI.
In the video, Colin Gray is seen talking to officers about his son’s access to weapons and their shared interest in shooting and hunting. He expresses shock and anger over the allegations and promises to remove all guns from the house if his son is found to be involved in any threats.
Colin explains that he is trying to teach his son about firearms and safety, and that Colt understands the seriousness of weapons. He also mentions that Colt has talked to him about school shootings and being picked on at school.
When Colt is brought out to speak to the investigators, he denies making any threats about a school shooting and claims his online account may have been hacked. His father interjects to support his son’s statements.
Both Colt and Colin are now facing charges of murder in connection to the school shooting. Colt, who is 14 years old, will be tried as an adult for the crimes. Colin Gray could potentially face a life sentence if found guilty. He gave his troubled son an AR-15-style rifle for Christmas, which was used in the recent school shooting. Authorities have charged him with four counts of manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder, and eight counts of cruelty to children as an alleged accessory in the crime. The penalties for these charges could amount to 30 years for each felony murder count and 10 years for each involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to children charge. The alleged gunman’s maternal grandfather has expressed that Colin Gray should be held accountable and even suggested the death penalty for him.
