New Report Says Technology Built Into Chinese-Made Cargo Cranes Could Be a ‘Trojan Horse’ for US Seaports

The joint congressional report suggests that all U.S. ports should promptly deactivate and eliminate any modems present on cranes following a finding that Chinese cargo cranes in use in the United States could potentially be used by Beijing for surveillance and interference in port operations. In the event of a conflict between the two nations, infrastructure coordination would be essential. President Joe Biden recently issued an executive order in February, enabling the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to tackle maritime cyber threats and implement cybersecurity standards to safeguard the networks and systems of U.S. ports.
