Authorities in Mexico’s Los Cabos area issued a warning for residents and tourists to stay indoors as Tropical Storm Ileana hit the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula with heavy rain. Ileana, which formed off the Pacific coast on Thursday, was moving north-northwest at 8 mph, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. The storm was expected to pass over or near the resorts of San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.
As of Friday morning, Ileana was located about 55 miles southeast of Cabo San Lucas with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. A tropical storm warning was in effect for parts of the Baja California Peninsula, with forecasters predicting significant rainfall in the region.
The storm was projected to move across the southern portion of the Baja California peninsula and into the Gulf of California over the weekend. Los Cabos Civil Protection issued a red alert for the area, advising residents to remain indoors and stay updated on alerts issued by authorities.
Schools in Los Cabos were closed on Friday, and authorities set up temporary shelters for residents at risk of flooding. Despite the storm, some businesses remained operational, with workers monitoring the situation closely.
Overall, residents were urged to prioritize safety and follow instructions from authorities until the storm had passed.
