I have authored numerous articles on natural hair care throughout the years, including recipes for nourishing conditioner and herbal hair treatments to promote healthier hair. However, the key to healthy hair lies in scalp health. This hair growth oil is designed to nourish the scalp and is beneficial for individuals experiencing hair loss and breakage.
Initially, I developed this recipe with men in mind who may be noticing thinning hair as they age. Nonetheless, many women are also seeking hair products to improve hair health. Factors such as over styling, tight hairstyles (like tight braids), heat styling tools, thyroid issues, androgenetic alopecia, and pregnancy can all contribute to hair loss.
It’s worth noting that over half of women will experience hair loss at some point in their lives. Even if you don’t have thinning hair, you may simply desire longer hair.
After experiencing post-pregnancy hair changes, I began exploring natural methods to promote hair regrowth for myself. I soon realized that this hair growth oil could be equally beneficial for men looking to prevent hair loss. Whether you’re male or female, if you’re noticing a decrease in hair volume, the good news is that natural solutions are available.
Encourage Healthy Hair Growth
Just like with any other aspect of health, a nutritious diet is the foundation for healthy hair. Nutrients such as biotin and collagen are essential for maintaining strong and healthy hair of all types. Experts recommend focusing on B vitamins, vitamin C (for collagen production), Omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins D and A.
Iron deficiency can also play a role in hair health. Iron is crucial for promoting healthy blood flow to the hair follicles. While I prioritize obtaining nutrients from whole foods, supplements can help bridge any nutritional gaps. A well-rounded diet can help reduce hair breakage, receding hairlines, and split ends.
Hydration and mineral intake are equally important. If you’re experiencing dry hair, frizz, or a dry scalp, increasing your water intake may be necessary. You can find my recipe for a hydrating mineral drink here.
Oil Treatment for Hair Growth
If your hair needs some extra care, a natural scalp treatment can work wonders. Various natural oils are known to promote quick and effective hair growth. Popular options include almond oil, argan oil, coconut oil, and jojoba oil. For individuals with alopecia, vitamin E can help reduce oxidative damage to the scalp and stimulate hair growth.
In this particular recipe, I utilize the following oils:
- Castor oil – Known for its detoxifying properties in remedies like castor oil packs. I’ve personally used it to thicken and lengthen my hair as well as my eyelashes. Castor oil not only aids in preventing hair loss but also significantly boosts hair growth. I experienced a 1.5-inch increase in hair length within a month of using it twice a week!
- Black Seed Oil – Black seed oil offers numerous benefits, especially for hair growth. It can help address fungal infections that contribute to hair loss and may prevent thinning hair altogether. Whether used internally or topically, it’s essential to perform a skin patch test before extensive application, as black seed oil may cause irritation for some individuals.
- Rosemary Oil – Renowned for its hair growth-stimulating properties, rosemary is often included in hair growth treatments and shampoos. Its addition not only enhances the recipe’s effectiveness by reducing inflammation and dandruff but also provides a pleasant scent.
- Lavender Essential Oil – Another beneficial oil for skin and hair health, lavender helps balance the aroma of black cumin seed and rosemary while promoting a refreshing scent.
While tea tree and peppermint oil can also be beneficial, I haven’t personally incorporated them into my recipe. Adding a few drops of tea tree oil, if desired, can help combat dandruff, greasy scalp, or fungal issues. Peppermint oil stimulates the scalp and enhances blood circulation for improved hair growth.
Optional Olive and Cayenne Oil
Cayenne is known to enhance blood circulation and is a traditional remedy for hair loss and muscle soreness. If you wish to include it in your hair growth oil, you can easily create an infusion. Here’s how:
- Combine the ingredients in the top of a double boiler and allow them to infuse for approximately an hour.
- Alternatively, you can opt for a solar infusion by placing the cayenne and oil in a glass jar under sunlight for a few days.
- Strain out the cayenne and retain the oil for use in your hair growth oil recipe.
Natural Hair Growth Oil Recipe
A blend of oils that promote hair growth, such as castor oil, black cumin seed, rosemary, and lavender.
Yield: 3 ounces
-
Combine all the ingredients in a dark glass bottle. A brown dropper bottle can be used, but I reuse the black cumin seed bottle. It has special miron glass that protects the oils from going rancid for years.
-
Moisten hair and massage 10-30 drops (or ½ to 1 teaspoon) into the scalp.
-
Leave on for one hour or overnight and wash out. I recommend using at night and sleeping with a towel on the pillow to avoid oil stains.
-
Use once a week or as needed to increase hair growth.
Test the oils on a small part of the inner arm before using on the entire scalp. Don’t use it if it causes any reaction or sensitivity. Black cumin seed oil will irritate the skin for a small percentage of people with sensitive skin.
