As the bushfire season approaches, New South Wales (NSW) communities will be equipped with satellites and solar panels to ensure connectivity. The state government is introducing portable equipment connected to Elon Musk’s Starlink network to provide backup internet access during natural disasters. This initiative aims to keep communities and emergency responders connected even in challenging circumstances.
The portable technology includes trailer-mounted, solar-powered satellite internet stations capable of delivering wi-fi coverage within a 500-meter radius. Additionally, four portable connectivity units are being deployed, which can be combined to cover larger areas. These units will be accessible at Service NSW disaster-recovery centers and will include a satellite-equipped vehicle for setting up temporary offices with internet connectivity.
The provided connectivity will enable individuals to contact loved ones, seek government support, and file insurance claims following disaster events. Premier Chris Minns highlighted the importance of this technology in helping people stay connected during times of need. Emergency Services Minister Jihad Dib emphasized the rapid deployment capabilities of the technology, especially in situations where existing communication infrastructure may be damaged.
The government’s investment of approximately $5 million (US$3.4 million) in this technology underscores its commitment to ensuring connectivity during emergencies. The four units will be stationed in Sydney and deployed as needed in disaster-affected areas. The mobile wi-fi transmitters will access satellite internet services, with plans to integrate various satellite services based on testing and capacity requirements.
NSW Telco Authority managing director Kylie De Courteney highlighted the flexibility of the units to accommodate different satellite services, including Starlink and potentially the National Broadband Network SkyMuster. This adaptability ensures that the technology remains effective as new satellite services emerge.
