MOSCOW—Russia’s space agency announced on Friday that two Russian astronauts have broken the record for the longest continuous stay on the International Space Station.
Roscosmos confirmed that Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub surpassed the previous record of 370 days, 21 hours, and 22 minutes set in September 2023 by Russians Sergei Prokopiev and Dmitry Petelin, along with American Francisco Rubio.
Chub and Kononenko will extend their total duration before their scheduled return to Earth on Monday.
At 59 years old, Kononenko also holds other space duration records, with the most cumulative time spent in space—1,110 days over five missions by the time he lands in Kazakhstan next week.
During the Russians’ record-breaking stay, American astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams were also aboard the space station. Williams and Wilmore had initially planned to be on the ISS for only eight days after launching in June, but their Boeing Starliner capsule had issues and was sent back without them. They are now expected to return in February.
