Reports indicate that several Iranian nationals have been charged with crimes related to the hacking of former President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign.
According to Politico, a federal grand jury approved the indictment, and the Justice Department is expected to announce the charges soon.
The charges stem from an Iranian cyber operation against the Trump campaign, where stolen material was shared with media outlets and President Biden’s campaign in an attempt to influence the 2024 election.
The Trump campaign acknowledged the hack, attributing it to Tehran, after receiving a dossier on JD Vance from an AOL email account linked to an entity named “Robert.”
Confirmation from FBI and intelligence agencies revealed Iran’s involvement in the hack and attempted breaches of Biden campaign email accounts.
Microsoft and Google had previously reported Iranian breaches in another campaign.
Recently, US security agencies disclosed that the stolen Trump campaign material was shared with individuals connected to Biden’s re-election campaign.
Foreign government-backed hackers are typically located overseas, making extradition to the US unlikely.
Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen stated that Iran is increasing efforts to influence the election and growing more aggressive.
Trump was briefed on specific threats from Iran to assassinate him, as reported by his campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung.
The Justice Department has been contacted for further information.
