The Department of Homeland Security recently added two Chinese companies to its list of firms banned from exporting their products to the United States. This decision aims to protect U.S. supply chains from forced labor practices in China’s Xinjiang region. The companies affected are Baowu Group Xinjiang Bayi Iron and Steel Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Baowu Steel Group, and Changzhou Guanghui Food Ingredients Co., Ltd., an artificial sweetener maker.
The move marks the first time a steel manufacturer and a sweetener maker have been included on the list of companies involved in the communist regime’s state-sponsored slave labor and abuses against the Uyghurs. With the addition of these two companies, the total number of China-based companies on the list has now reached 75.
Both the Biden and Trump administrations have recognized the genocide taking place in Xinjiang, where the Chinese Communist Party has detained over 1 million Uyghur Muslims in internment camps. The Uyghur American Association and Senator James Risch have commended Homeland Security for holding China accountable for its human rights abuses. The United Nations human rights office has also raised concerns about Beijing’s treatment of Uyghurs, describing it as potentially amounting to crimes against humanity.
Despite denials from Beijing, victims have reported forced labor, forced abortions, sterilizations, and other abuses in Xinjiang. The Chinese government has threatened to sanction foreign companies that reduce their reliance on Xinjiang for their supply chains. One such company under investigation is PVH Group, which owns brands like Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger.
