Years ago, there were more Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) programs and occupational trade courses in high schools.
Unfortunately, many of these programs were removed to make room for more technology courses. While technology subjects are important, they may not cater to students who are not interested in pursuing higher education or high-tech careers.
Introducing ROTC programs into more high schools in California and other states could have positive effects on both society and the students who participate. These programs provide discipline, structure, and a sense of commitment to something greater than oneself. They help students build character, learn teamwork, and take on responsibilities.
ROTC programs can also foster a sense of patriotism and a desire to serve selflessly. Some students who participate in high school ROTC may continue on to more advanced programs in college or join the active or reserve armed forces after graduation. The benefits and opportunities in the military have been improving in recent years.
Participating in high school ROTC can give students an advantage over their peers who join the military without prior training. Many new recruits struggle with discipline and work ethic, making the transition to military life challenging.
Additionally, the decline of occupational trade programs in public high schools in the 1970s and 1980s was a mistake. These programs provided valuable elective courses that allowed students to explore hands-on skills in areas like auto shop, carpentry, and metal work.
Not all students are suited for traditional academic paths, and many thrive in hands-on subjects. Restoring practical trade programs in high schools could help meet the demand for skilled workers in various trades.
Agricultural, mechanical, construction, and technical trades are in high demand in both public and private sectors. By reintroducing trade programs in high schools, more students can gain initial skills and pursue further training and internships in these fields.
It is important to offer a variety of elective courses to students as they progress through school, allowing them to explore their interests and talents. The technical trade route offers promising career opportunities with room for growth and advancement.
Reintroducing trade programs in high schools can benefit the economy and national security. It is crucial to provide students with options that align with their skills and interests to ensure a successful future.
