Marie-Philippe Bouchard is widely regarded as a talented and intelligent woman with a strong track record in the francophone public television sector.
As she takes on the role of President and CEO of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and Société Radio-Canada (SRC), starting her five-year term on Jan. 1, 2025, I sincerely wish her all the best in her new position. The initial days and weeks may be enjoyable, but the challenges ahead are significant.
One of the primary challenges is that Bouchard’s experience lies mainly within the francophone television realm, particularly at SRC and as the CEO of TV. While SRC has garnered praise for its content, it is not without criticism, including concerns about separatist sympathies among some staff, competition for advertising revenue, and a perceived focus on Montreal-centric news.
On the CBC side, viewership is low, and public sentiment towards the network is unfavorable. The promise to “defund the CBC” has been a popular rallying cry among Conservative leaders, with the current leader, Pierre Poilievre, potentially following through on this pledge if elected. This could mean significant changes for the CBC under Bouchard’s leadership.
Bouchard has been involved in shaping a new mandate for the CBC/SRC, which could guide her actions in the coming months. Rebuilding trust with anglophone Canadians and addressing the legacy left by her predecessor will be key priorities for her tenure.
To regain trust, actions will speak louder than words. Bold initiatives, such as restructuring and strategic partnerships, may be necessary to win back viewers and restore faith in the CBC.
Ultimately, Bouchard faces a challenging task ahead, but with strategic planning and decisive action, she may be able to reshape the future of the CBC and SRC.
