As the 2024 presidential election nears its conclusion, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump will both host campaign events in Texas on Friday, each focusing on key issues.
Harris, the Democratic candidate, will be in Houston discussing abortion rights at a rally where Beyoncé, a Houston native and superstar singer, is expected to make an appearance.
Meanwhile, Trump, the Republican nominee, will be in Austin holding a press conference at a private jet terminal at 12:30 p.m. local time to address border security and illegal immigrant crime.
During his time in Austin, Trump will also record a session with Joe Rogan for the popular podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience.
The decision for Trump to hold a press conference in Austin came after the surprising move by the Harris campaign to rally in the traditionally Republican state.
Accompanying Trump at his event will be Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas).
In Houston, Harris will show support for Democratic Senate candidate Colin Allred, who is currently trailing Cruz in the polls. According to the RealClearPolitics polling average as of Oct. 24, Cruz holds a 4.2 percentage point lead over Allred.
Willie Nelson, a country music legend from Abbott, Texas, is also expected to attend Harris’s event in Houston.
A recent Wall Street Journal poll conducted between Oct. 19 and Oct. 22, which surveyed 1,500 registered voters, showed Trump leading Harris 47 percent to 45 percent. The survey also highlighted the economy as the top concern for voters, followed by immigration and abortion.
Abortion rights are a key focus of Harris’s campaign, and she selected Texas for her event due to the state’s strict laws. The event will feature women impacted by these restrictions since the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022.
Passing a national abortion law would be challenging, requiring 60 votes in the Senate and a majority in the House. During a recent town hall, Harris suggested potential changes to the filibuster to address this issue.
Beyoncé, who has allowed Harris to use her song “Freedom” at campaign rallies, is expected to make an appearance at the event in Houston.
In a recent campaign stop in Georgia, Harris shared the stage with former President Barack Obama for the first time, with a performance by Bruce Springsteen.
According to the RealClearPolitics average as of Oct. 24, Trump is leading in all seven battleground states, which are crucial in determining the election outcome in November.
In Georgia, Trump holds a 2.2 percentage point lead, along with narrow leads in Arizona, North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
