According to a recent report, one out of every ten of the most violent inmates in a Texas county jail are illegal immigrants who are targeted for deportation by federal immigration authorities.
Records obtained by Fox News show that over 1,100 violent criminals currently held in the Harris County Jail in Houston have detainers filed by US Immigration & Customs Enforcement. These inmates include individuals accused of murder and child rape.
An ICE detainer is a notification sent to local law enforcement regarding their intention to take custody of a person upon their release from jail. It requests information on the person’s release and asks for them to be detained for an additional 48 hours to allow ICE agents to assume custody.
The data, acquired through an open records request, reveals that some of the most dangerous defendants in Texas entered the US illegally.
The Harris County Jail in Texas currently houses around 9,500 inmates, with more than 1,100 of them having ICE detainers.
Victoria Garcia, whose son was allegedly killed by an illegal migrant, expressed her concerns about the situation, emphasizing the need for proper vetting of individuals entering the country.
The records indicate that nearly half of the migrants detained in the Houston jail are facing charges related to violent crimes, including numerous cases of sexual assault involving children under 14 years old.
Additionally, there are 22 capital murder cases linked to migrants held in the jail.
Two individuals from Venezuela are also in custody for the rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl. The victim’s mother has criticized the lax immigration policies of the current administration.
Tom Ramsey, Harris County Precinct 3 Commissioner, acknowledged the issue of criminal migrants in jails and emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety and addressing crime.
According to the records, there are 1,170 inmates with ICE detainers out of the total 9,527 inmates in Harris County.
Requests for similar information from other county sheriff’s offices were denied, and are now under review by the Texas Attorney General’s Office.
Garcia, the mother of the slain victim, expressed her determination to advocate for justice on behalf of her son.
