Lesley Hill has been appointed as the new youth protection director for the Quebec government, following the resignation of her predecessor amidst various scandals within the agency.
Hill brings extensive experience in youth services and was a member of the Laurent Commission, which conducted a public inquiry into the province’s youth protection system following a tragic incident in Granby, Que., in 2019.
The Coalition Avenir Québec government has been facing challenges, including the suspension or dismissal of nine educators at a Montreal youth detention facility for engaging in sexual contact with minors. Additionally, a youth protection agency in the Mauricie region was placed under trusteeship in October due to concerns about the removal of children from their parents.
Former director Catherine Lemay stepped down on Monday under the direction of Social Services Minister Lionel Carmant.
Hill is scheduled to hold a press conference in Quebec City with Carmant on Thursday morning.
