The Georgia secretary of state’s office recorded over 4 million votes cast during the state’s early voting period, which ended on Nov. 1. The total number of ballots cast was 4,004,588, with 3,761,968 being in-person votes and 242,620 mail-in absentee ballots.
According to a press statement from the secretary of state’s office on Nov. 2, 92 Georgia counties had surpassed a 50 percent turnout, marking an unprecedented level of voter participation in the state’s history. Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger described this election cycle’s early voting period as the most successful in Georgia’s history.
Georgia was a closely contested battleground state in the 2020 election, with President Donald Trump initially leading the vote totals on election night. However, the results shifted in favor of candidate Joe Biden in the following days.
Following a hand-recount of the election results, Biden was certified as the winner in Georgia. Trump continued to dispute the results, leading to a pending criminal trial in Fulton County, Georgia, on allegations of criminal conspiracy related to election interference.
Raffensperger’s office has been vigilant in monitoring for any signs of interference in Georgia’s election process. They have identified individuals who may have violated state laws by attempting to cast multiple ballots, and investigated and debunked false claims of voter fraud.
The presidential race in Georgia remains tight in the final days leading up to Election Day, with polls showing Trump holding a slight lead over Vice President Kamala Harris.
