SYDNEY—A 5.48 metre (18 ft) Australian crocodile that held the world record as the largest crocodile in captivity has passed away, as announced by a wildlife sanctuary on Saturday. The crocodile, known as Cassius, was believed to be over 110 years old.
Weighing over one ton, Cassius had been experiencing declining health since October 15, Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat shared on Facebook.
According to a post by the organization located on Green Island near Cairns, Queensland, “He was very old and believed to be living beyond the years of a wild Croc.” The post also mentioned, “Cassius will be deeply missed, but our love and memories of him will remain in our hearts forever.”
The sanctuary’s website indicated that Cassius had resided there since 1987, having been transported from the nearby Northern Territory, where crocodiles play a significant role in the region’s tourism industry.
Cassius, a saltwater crocodile, had held the Guinness World Records title as the largest crocodile in captivity.
He obtained this title following the passing of Philippines crocodile Lolong in 2013, who measured 6.17 m (20 ft 3 in) long, as recognized by Guinness.
